THE ANTI-MILITARIST LEAGUE
OF NEW YORK
[The Anti-Militarist League of New York was founded at the New York Ferrer Centre on April 23rd 1914, immediately after the Ludlow Massace, which took place on April 20th 1914. Founders included, Leonard Abbott, Alexander Berkman, (secretary-treasurer) Becky Edelsohn and M. Eleanor Fitzgerald (Fitzie). Its aim was to publicize the events of the Ludlow massacre as well as oppose the threat of impending war with Mexico. Its headed notepaper declared that “War is a quarrel between two thieves” and argued for “Insurrection rather than war”. Other branches were set up in Denver and Paterson.
This was, probably, the first meeting of the League.
