No better object can be served than by a brief account of the almost forgotten history of the Chicago Martyrs. The trouble arose by a strike at McCormick’s factory in Chicago, where the men were agitating for an 8 hours day, following which a meeting was held in the Haymarket Square, May 4th, 1886, to discuss the 8 hour question and to protest against the brutality of the police at previous meetings. While the meeting was being conducted it was attacked by 200 armed policemen; a bomb was thrown—by whom it has never been discovered—which resulted in the death of 7 policemen. Our comrades, August Spies, Albert R. Parsons, Louis Lingg, Adolf Fisher, George Engel, Oscar Neebe, Samuel Fielden, and Michael Schwab, were arrested and tried for constructive murder and condemned to death Oct. 9th, 1886. No evidence was produced at the trial connecting them with the throwing of the bomb. Three were afterwards pardoned by Governor John P. Altgeld. It transpired during the trial that policemen were given $487,000 in 5 years for wiping out “Reds.” At the conclusion of the trial $100,000 were presented to the Jury by the Chicago capitalists. Five of them afterwards died in the asylum. 

Recently we have seen how the Japanese Government have executed Dr. Kotoku and his little band of 12 on a false charge of plotting against the Emperor; and in this way they think they will stifle the gospel of human emancipation. 

Again, the McNamara case in America shows that the capitalists are prepared to manufacture false evidence to murder if possible the Labour leaders, silence revolt, and outrage morality and the noblest instincts of the race by their foul malignity.
